Lights Out: Earth Hour

Need a good excuse for a candle light dinner tonight?  Join in the millions of people across the world for 60 minutes: unplugged. The global grass roots movement of Earth Hour  encourages individuals, businesses,  and governments around the world take positive actions for our environment. Turn off all your lights on Saturday 26 March at 8.30PM (local time) and celebrate your commitment to the planet.

The challenge if you so choose to accept it:  Go beyond the hour, so after the lights go back on think about what else you can do to make a difference.
Together our actions add up.
I've been having some fun this morning following tweets from across the world as the lights go out. Search #earth hour to see for yourself!

5 Year Old Favorites

Meet S. He's my rough and tumble, sweet and sour, monster truck loving, superhero. Eater of macoroni and cheese and pancakes only... but not together.
Here are some of his favorite things:
Monster Jam: Airforce Afterburner Truck
He is a long time Grave Digger fan, and frequently changes his own name to Grave Digger, along with Johnny Cash, Bruce Wayne, Batman, Ironman, Robin.... I could go on. This week he received a package in the mail from Nana, and asked who it addressed to. I read his name. He then huffed and said, "My mail should say To: Airforce Afterbuner From: PUS (he means UPS)"

Christmas morning
The boys each have one of these awesome wooden monster trucks,
made by craftygrandpa on etsy. They were gifts (again from Nana... sheesh! spoil much?) Besides the Monster Jam truck collection, this has become a favorite.

I'm a huge fan of anything we can all sing along to in the jeep, so when I heard that the
Bare Naked Ladies had put out a kids album called Snacktime, I had to check it out. S loves loves loves this song, to the point that its worn out on my cd!

I'd love to hear about your childs favorite things, activities, or songs feel free to share in a comment below.

Kentucky Crafted: Market

Sunday, I spent the afternoon with my family at the Kentucky Crafted: Market in Louisville, KY.
It is consistently named one of the best art fairs in the country and boasts over 800 artisans from all walks of life. (By that I mean, foodies- handmade- literary- musicans...) To see more, check out the 2011 Market program at:  http://kycraft.ky.gov/Market2011Program.pdf

I promised I would bring my camera to capture some of my favorite sights, but once I got inside I realized that there was only 1 of 2 batteries in the camera. Whoops! and I am kind of wondering where the other battery made off to?? But thanks to the world wide webbernet I am still able to show and tell.

Artisan Marshmellows? This should sum it up for you: YUM! This is definitely something I have never seen or heard of before and was excited to try the lime and avocado flavor! They're  made using all natural ingredients including Michigan beet sugar, Ohio glucose, and Indiana cornstarch. I'll be raving about these lovely ladies from Indiana for a while- you can stop in http://www.240sweet.com/

Besides the great food we tasted, I think that our favorite attractions were the exhibitors that had live demos. The boys had the chance to touch the wool as it was being spun, weave looms, and even watch as another artist created some vibrant lampwork beads right in front of our eyes. I found myself submerged in their craft, skill, and a new found appreciate for all they create. So many of the friendly people welcomed my oldest son in and discussed they're paintings, designs, and mediums with him- I am so thankful for each of them taking the time to foster the curiosity and imagination of a 5 year old.

PhbeaD is local to me (kind of) out of Berea, KY. She has PhD in Biochemistry and combines her love for science and jewelry. I am drawn to her work because its beautiful, unique, and her desire to preserve natures environment.

Another way to catch my eye, is to use recycled materials! I can't help it- I am a sucker for all things repurposed. (as you already know) When I came upon Mayapple Creations, and read the hanging banner that said (We Use Recycled Metals)... or something to that effect. I had to stop and find out more. Josie and her husband use only hands tools creating intricate designs inspired by nature. They use recycled sterling silver and copper as well as fair trade recycled glass to accent their work.

... the company you keep

Friendship Pack Mini Bean Bag Dolls by stephaniemonroe on Etsy

If you were to ask my gram, she would tell you that others will judge you based on the company you keep. There once was a time when I thought that maybe she was a little loony in her old school ways, but I've come to realize that she was mostly right.

Partnerships, contacts, teams, venues, forums, friendships, sales= connections. As a seller each and every one of these connections can be very influential to you as an artist and a business. Looking around at my own nooks and crannies.  I find myself surrounded with eco minded, tree hugging, nature/adventure lovers, trendy and hip parents, and genuine people who love what they do/create.

My company is a continual source of inspiration and support and I hope that you judge me by the company I keep.

On my to do list.

It seems like there aren't enough hours in the day, and even though this tutorial from Chez Beeper Bebe has been sitting in my bookmarks for over 5 months, I still haven't had the chance to make it. Maybe its some form of nostalgia that has me so captivated by this dime store trinket toy, maybe its Batman paratrooper that I love, or maybe its the repurposing of those vintage silk scarves- either way this is one tutorial that is on my to do list.

Do you have any tutorials or projects on your to do list? I'd love to hear about them!

America Recycles Day Webbernet Recap 11.15.10 : Tutorials

Perhaps the biggest impact that our daily recycling habits will have on our world is the effect recycling will have for future generations to come. When we take the time out of our busy lives to help recycle all of the products that we can we will be doing all that we can to help keep our planet around for as long as possible. I want to thank Elaina from Cottage Babies/Elainas, Jessica from Noguchi Designs, and Maya from Maya Made Herbals for contributing these tutorials and sharing some very creative ways that you can reuse many items that might otherwise end up on the curb in the trash.

RiotCart/March of Dimes Promotion

During the month of March, 20% of the purchase price for items from the following stores will be donated to the March of Dimes, an organization created to give all babies the best possible start in life. All you have to do is SHOP! Don’t see your favorite here? Shoot the shop owner a PM and ask them to participate!
And for those of you crafty craftsters out there who have been thinking about opening up a shop here on RiotCart (or extending your current term to riot with us a bit longer), this is the month to do it! RC itself will also be donating 20% of the amount of ANY term purchased to the MoD cause.

Maureen O'Connor, publisher of green-savvy lifestyle site AlternativeConsumer.com, has the following tips for eco-conscious consumers: “I think it’s important for people not to get overwhelmed by the need to become more eco-conscious. Most of us lead hectic, fast-paced lives. We should do our best to make changes as quickly as possible, but realize that we can’t change our entire life, overnight. Sometimes we just need to step back, slow down and take a deep breath. Appreciate what’s around us, and clear our minds.”
“Start by making simple changes, and being more conscious of our surroundings. Replace the light-bulbs with LED’s in your home and office; use re-chargeable batteries, conserve tap water, and my personal pet peeve — bring your own re-usable shopping bag when you go to the store. Support local farms and businesses (to save energy/transportation costs) and buy organic whenever possible. Lose the Hummer.”
“Most importantly, think about the total life cycle of a product before you buy something: consider how it was created, and what you can do with it or where it will end up when you’re through with it. Recycling, upcycling, conserving and bio-degradability are all key issues today.”
