You're invited to take part in this year's most unique sewing mail swap celebrating America Recycles Day! The goal of this swap is three fold: You are encouraged to push past their traditional fabric choices and look at "waste" materials in a new way- repurposing and reimaging items we might throw away. I guarantee you will never look at trash the same way after this! Meet and connect with new people around the country who are mindful, creative, and as passionate as you are. Lastly, embrace this as an opportunity to inspire others and raise awareness about America Recycles Day which is celebrated on November 15th every year.

By opting in and participating in The Wasted Swap you are agreeing to make one reusable zipper bag OR reusable tote using reclaimed materials. This includes and is in no way limited to harvesting fabrics and elements of design from disassembling clothing, upholstery, leather, shoes, etc, creating or creating your own fabric from plastic. I completely encourage you to kick it up a notch and really try to use unconventional materials. Think CD's, tooth picks, monopoly money, tubes. You will be making a tote or zipper pouch for someone else and in return someone will be assigned to making a tote or zipper pouch for you. According to the Environmental Protection Agency; 70% of the items in our landfills today can be recycled or reused. Together we're shedding light on this important issue while encouraging others to seek creative alternatives.

Partners will be paired at random and notifications will be sent out shortly after 9/10. Packages must be post marked by NOVEMBER 10th 2017. September kicks of National Sewing Month- you'll find great deals on sewing related products, new patterns, tutorials, and giveaways on the web for those of you who already love to sew. The Sewing Loft is issuing a challenge (watch for the announcement on Friday!) and over on We All Sew will be hosting a community event & giving away a new BERNINA sewing machine. This year I'm going to do something a little different by giving away free beginner level sewing lessons to, well, everyone!!

At least once a week I meet someone who wishes to learn how to sew- fear of the machine, overwhelmed by the thread path, or just in general not sure where you actually start. Not to mention my area doesn't even have a local shop or store they could go to for help. I'm helping take these factors out of the equation and encouraging friends and family around the world to learn something new. Join my facebook group, TrashN2Tees Creative Reuse Community to participate in this weekly crash course for the whole month of September. I will stream live every Thursday at 11am EST for about 30 minutes but hope that you are engaged and asking questions which I promise to answer the best I can.
I don't expect that I will plant a magic seed that fosters a love of fashion design for the next winner of Project Runway- but it could happen?! My goal is that sewing machines come out of the closet and onto tables around the world for just one month. I want to provide new sewist of any age a valuable learning experience, helping them to understand how a sewing machine works and gain the confidence they need to hem a shirt, add a button, or make their first quilt.

Check back Thursday for a short list of suggested supplies you'll need to participate and please feel free to comment below with any questions you might have.

Over the years there have been buzz words like "green" or "upcycling" or even "organic"- lately, I've been seeing more and more of the term "Zero Waste." The term zero waste, broadly refers to a lifestyle that celebrates minimalism, rejects the concept of disposable items, challenges consumerism, and encourages people to come up with alternative reusable solutions to everyday life. Read on for my favorite tips to help you transition to a zero waste lifestyle.

Do you have a reusable coffee mug or water bottle you drink from every day? By using it you are keeping countless amounts of waste from our landfills. That's just one small action we can take each day to reduce our impact on the environment.

With a growing family of four, I find it's not always easy (or affordable) to go green, but we make a genuine and honest effort to make the smartest choices where we're able. I forget my reusable grocery bags at least once a month and I feel guilty. Yet, 90% of our wardrobes are handmade or second-hand. I'm no expert. Zero waste takes practice. And we try. It's my responsibility to model and instill these values understanding how it affects the way our children (my boys) see/consume waste now and in the future.

Naturally, they're in tuned very much with textile consumption and the notion of fast fashion because so much of my personal work is focused in this area. But while planning our grocery shopping list today the topic came up about buying in bulk using mason jars or reusable containers (plastic free preferably) Food packaging makes up a large portion of our weekly waste, and we didn't have to look far for the evidence. Our family produces one bin of trash each week but 4 bins of recycling. It's out of control!

Reusable produce bags from TrashN2Tees

Going to the grocery store is almost universal, and it's something we do about once a week. It's one of the easiest and biggest ways you can make an impact. Not just how you buy it, but also what you buy.

- Buying Local & Buying Bulk
- Use TrashN2Tees Reusable Produce bags (Buy here or Make Your Own!)
- Avoid small things that end up in trash like twist ties
- Refuse products that are over packaged
- Bring your own bags
- Use an app to write your grocery list in

Creating a zero waste home is much easier than you think. You'll find really great advice and more comprehensive actions on the blog Going Zero Waste
- Reusable Napkins (Pattern available my book The Upcycled T-shirt)
- Compost
- Use real plates/ cutlery
- Say no to take out packaging (but never give up take out)
- Walk/Bike where you can
- Capsule Wardrobes

I'm not entirely convinced zero waste is achievable but not everyone agrees. Béa Johnson, who launched the “Zero Waste” movement with her family 8 years ago, lives without generating any waste (or at least very little) is possible. She uses glass jars in the kitchen, making homemade cosmetic and cleaning products, swapping items, selecting resistant and interchangeable clothing... promising plenty of options that are available. According to Johnson, the most difficult waste to get rid of are papers (mailings) and multiple packaging which invade our daily life. Even knowing that zero waste isn't an end solution I recognize the influence and impact these actions have in reducing our waste by half, an effort if supported by all, that could really make a difference.

Don't feel pressured to fit your efforts into any one one word. You don't have to plastic free/vegan/zero waste/package free/organic eating to be doing the best you can for your family. Just keep practicing healthy habits- and look for creative solutions. Please feel free to share your routines and tips to creating a healthy happy home zero waste or otherwise in the comments below.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If I had a nickel for every time I've seen this question posted. "Do the new style feet fit a 1260?" <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Trust me, I've asked a few times myself. Today, <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I'm publishing you a straight forward look at what BERNINA presser feet styles fit which BERNINA sewing machines.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Let's talk a little about the presser feet- if you're not familiar with BERNINA that's okay. The foot design changed with the development of automatic needle threading capabilities on machines. In addition, the stitch width increased from 4.5mm (ie-930s) to 5.5mm (ie-440s), and then from 5.5mm to 9mm (ie- most Artistas) generation of feet. "Old Style" feet have white stickers with black numbers on the shank. "New Style" feet have white stickers with red numbers on the shank. (There's also a generation of really old feet which have the numbers engraved on the shank.)

Shopping second hand is a great way to find clothing and fabrics that can be used in your sewing room or to grow your own wardrobe without adding to waste stream. In addition to discovering unique items you are also helping to keep money in our local economy & support the green living movement. But what options do you have when you realize your latest treasure comes with an added surprise? It has a weird smell.

Over the years I've found a few trusty ways to remove any vintage musk or unwanted smell from thrift store items- and I can't wait to share how easy it really is to deodorize any wet basement, old lady like, moth ball, dust encrusted smelling fabrics without harsh chemicals or scented sprays.

Always prewash your fabrics and clothing before using them.

1. Vinegar & Water mixture there's a good chance you already knew this- but this is without a doubt the most suggested option for removing pesky smells from fabrics. This is best for items you know you can hand wash like a cotton dress or bedsheet. Use 5 parts water to 1 part white vinegar in a spray bottle. If you're washing fabrics in a sink, add a few tablespoons into the water and let the fabric sit for 15 minutes. Rinse in cool water and hang outside to dry letting the sunshine and fresh air do their magic. Don't worry about walking around smelling like kimchi, the vinegar scent will quickly dissipate. As vinegar is acidic, there are some fabrics that cannot handle the intensity due to age or delicacy and will dissolve in a vinegar wash, so be sure to use with caution.

2. Oxiclean Odor Blasters just like in the infomercials- OxiClean does the job. This specialty formulated mix was designed with odors in mind and works as both a deodorizer and stain remover in one. You can add it to the laundry or handwash in a bucket. Soak for up to 8 hours depending on the severity of stain or smell. Follow directions provided on product site/packaging.

3. Vodka, and you don't even need to use the good stuff. The cheapest hair curling rot you've got on the bottom shelf will do just fine. Add straight vodka to a spray bottle and lightly mist to dampen your fabrics/clothing. Do not over saturate. Let air dry.

4. Dawn Dish Soap know for its grease-cutting power when it comes to the kitchen sink, Dawn can be used to tackle some of your laundry issues as well. Learn how to make homemade laundry soap using this liquid blue magic right here.

5. Newspaper Perhaps the cheapest and most readily available choice on this list, a newspaper is incredibly useful. Many know that if your shoes become soaked after a sudden downpour, stuffing them to the brim with balled-up newspaper helps draw the moisture out of the leather, suede, etc. In the same way, stuffing the pockets and sleeves of a wool overcoat and then throwing it in a sealed plastic bag for a few days will help remove any moisture associated with mildew.

Bonus: Fels Naptha Soap, it's been used for 100's of years to spot remove stains. I included this in the list today because it can be used to treat all types of fabrics including delicate lace. It has a light fresh scent that does not linger in clothing. It

Before I scare you off entirely, I have to be honest... the majority of materials I come across don't smell funky. There are many options to help de-funk any type or size of fabric you may find while thrift store hunting or yard saling. Even with years of "experiments" my best advice is to exercise caution and test a garment in as inconspicuous a place as possible.

Do you have any deodorizing tips or tricks when it comes to store quilts, fabrics, and clothing? I
I'm constantly looking for more ways to cultivate the amazing community of support TrashN2Tees has gained over these 8 years. I know in the mix of parents, creatives, friends, small business owners, and sewing students come to my blog or social media outlets to be inspired. Today I opened up a Facebook Group that I hope will allow us to connect with one another, share stories, projects, ask questions and create change together.

You're definitely invited to join us: Trashn2Tees Creative Reuse Community Facebook Group

In the coming months, you'll notice that I'll be popping up in a few new spaces with more fun creative content.

TrashN2Tees YouTube
TrashN2Tees Mailing List

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1388430624793902854.post-42983155874031412202017-06-23T10:49:00.000-04:002017-06-23T10:49:22.688-04:00DIY Watermelon Skirt Knock Off

It's officially summer and what better way to celebrate than with watermelon & a new skirt? I was inspired by this dress available on Modcloth. Fabrics are organic cottons from Cloud 9 Fabrics which I picked up at Joanns.

I crafted a small seed shape stamp from old materials laying (a wristband to an old Fitbit that no longer works actually!) around the house and mounted it to a large glue stick cap. Using black fabric paint I stamped hundreds of seeds onto the bubblegum cotton. This time, I followed the pattern for Rae's Cleo skirt adding 2 inches of length.

After making two of the Cleo skirts, I'm having second thoughts and trying to decide if the shape of this pattern is right for my body. As much as I love it, I feel like the gathering is adding some volume to my already wide hips. I'll be looking for a good a-line skirt to try out next and we'll see how that plays out. If you have a go-to must have skirt pattern please share it with me!?
Last week's escapades included creating an improv scrappy quilt along with my Sam. We spent some time browsing the internet looking at the evolution of the American flag and he chose what design he wanted to create. Using a soft fusible interfacing on bottom we mapped out the layout for flag. The scrappy bits ranged in various sizes and weights were laid out, ironed to fuse, and later quilted.
Jessica of Quilty Habit happens to live nearby and dropped off several bags of small scrap fabrics which we were happy to start using up.
Yesterday I carved out time to try a new pattern! I love the idea of buying others pattern designs and building my handmade wardrobe. But, I generally have a harder time following someone else directions! I'll admit that I all too often start off following a pattern and then half way through throw it out the door and wing the rest. I do this, not because I think I know best, but because I get to a point in the pattern where I literally can't make sense of how it will piece together. That uncertainty spins me into a mental frenzy and I bail.

However, I don't recommend this practice. By winging it you're missing out on the magic of seeing and understanding how garments can be constructed beyond your own ideas.

As I type this, I'm certain that a few failed sewing pattern attempts have jaded me. Have you ever purchased an indie pattern that made no sense? Or was poorly produced, written, or just plain ass backward? (Raised hand) I have. Just like with anything you buy, my gram always says, "You get for, what you paid."

Enter the Cleo skirt, a pattern produced by Rae of Made By Rae. With a few easy clicks, I purchased that PDF and got started piecing the pattern together. I have big plans for this pattern- but before I get myself all invested in another project I thought it would be best to see how it whips up.

I reached for this multicolored vintage ikat fabric- it was a recent flea market score. Do you know how ikat textiles are made? These threads are actually dyed BEFORE being woven. I know I know, my mind is twisting already! Talent. Here's a great explaination to the history of Ikat.

I promised myself to follow Rae's pattern all the through and at the end of the day I have a great skirt! The pattern offers two options, I opted for view A. It came together seamlessly! I'm 5'8" so for the next version I will add two inches of length to the skirt and remove some of the fabric to reduce bulk. I consider myself to be a spoon shape and mama doesn't need any help in the hips!! Moral of the story... there will be more Cleo skirts in my future.

I think the next pattern I want to tackle is the Olaf Tank. Hahaha, okay that's not REALLY what it's called but that's what I have it associated with in my brain. Summer & airy tanks- any recommendations?

Do you prefer to sew your own clothes from exsisting patterns, refashion clothing, or draft your own pattern? What at the patterns you reach for again and again?
Our family spends many weekends and weekdays thrifting, antiquing, or hunting found treasures. Each one of us has a unique eye for unearthing the stories and adventures that are attached to second hand finds. Sam has a large collection of vintage toys, comics, and coins. Nick, he will drag home anything related to industrial, farming, and local history. I, naturally, seek out one of kind clothing pieces, linens, and that (inevitable) antique sewing that seems to always follow me home. I thought it would be fun to chronical our finds and share the stories behind them. In future posts I'll delve into our favorite places to pick, tips on shopping second hand, and how to display your finds without looking like a hoarder!
As I look around our home, I'm pressed to find more than a few items that were actually bought new from a store. Our house is adorned with vignettes everywhere- I can't get enough but it also offers me a little oasis to showcase these special items that seem to have become part of our family. It does sound a bit cheesy, I'll admit it... but I sometimes feel like it is our responsibility to protect the craft, the art, the heritage that is attached. I'm a romantic that way. Do you love shopping second hand, digging through thrift stores, or browsing the occasional estate sale? What has been your best buy ever tell me in the comments below-
Over the years I've experimented with many different forms of applique, tested 100's of fusible interfacings, spray glue or webbings, and created/sold thousands of applique products around the world. My mission to change the way we consume and create began with upcycling and repurposing t-shirts. TrashN2Tees has been recognized by Martha Stewart and many others for our efforts and design. As the we continue to grow I know it's just as important to share patterns and tutorials that will help you on your creative reuse journey as well. This tutorial can be adapted to fit any scale of project and you can find TrashN2Tees Applique Patterns in the shop.

What you'll need to get started:
Template (Flamingo Pattern)
Some type of fusible web
Note: My favorites really depend on the intricacy of the pattern, the function of whatever it's on, and size. Interfacings & Fusible Webs I recommend for knit applique include: Pellon EZ Steam II, this is one of my go-to products I love that it has a double side sticky which lends itself to working with kids or when completing a larger project with many layers or pieces. Many many tutorials I've read recommend Wonder Under- in a pinch it will do the job, however, wonder under is not my favorite to work with. I find that it doesn't adhere well enough to between fabrics (remember we are talking about knits so it may work well for quilting cotton.) Pellon also has a product called Clear Fuse- this has an aggressive glue pattern and is not tacky. The glue is activated using a hot iron. Clear Fuse is also nice because you can clearly see through the plasticy cellophane-like material.
Marker or Pen for tracing
Black works best. Red Sharpie has a tendency to smear or transfer when heat.
Sharp Serrated 6" Fabric Scissors
Iron
Jersey Knit Fabric or reclaimed t-shirts
you'll notice I use the terms knit or t-shirt or jersey fabrics within designs or tutorials. Jersey Knit Fabric is the type of material t-shirts are made from. My patterns and tutorials are all created with reuse in mind however you are welcome to create using purchased yardage or otherwise.
Needle & Thread
(while a great many fusible interfacings claim to be no sew... they are, and aren't to some degree. If you are planning to make something that will be used, moved, laid on, worn, or washed frequently I highly recommend sewing your applique for long lastly results.)

First, transfer your template onto fusible of choice. TrashN2Tees patterns are mirror imaged already when downloaded. My fusible is precious to me, I go through a lot! When I trace any pattern I am careful to clump similar colors together (I've also laid out my patterns in this manner)

Next, you'll follow the manufacturer's directions on how to apply to the fabric. Many require you to use a low/medium heat setting. DO NOT overheat the fusible- the glue on these products activates at a certain point and once you go beyond that you basically burn up the glue so it is not usable. How will you know if you've burnt out your fusible? Well... it won't stick and then you'll call the manufacturer and tell them they sent you faulty product only to find out you over heated it. (Ask me how I know?) As I sit here I'm just thinking of an analogy to share- it came to me! It's similar to toasting a marshmallow- there's that juuuuuust right spot when it's kinda gooey but not too much but once you leave your stick in there too long it's just an overcooked mallow. Ew! Next. you'll cut out the shapes from your interfacing. I suggest cutting slightly away from the interfacing leaving a 1/4" past your design around the edge.

Once we apply the fusible to your fabric and it's adhered this extra bit will help to stabilize your knit or t-shirt fabrics allowing you to cut cleanly to the desired shape. If you are using an iron in this step, wait for the design to cool before cutting. Cutting too soon can cause your favorite scissors to get gunked up with glue residue over time. I would also like to mention here a little more on scissor choice. Do not try to cut fabric especially t-shirt or jersey knit materials with household scissors. It's not pretty! Garment scissors and rotary cutters work great for these fabrics but in this case, I use a medium size pair of pointy serrated edge scissors. Pictured here are blue handled Karen Kay Buckley scissors but I also really love using my KAI/Omnigrid pair for finely detailed cut outs. The serrated edge grasps the fabric edge and cuts nicely.

Layer & sew are the final steps. This flamingo applique design is a simple design compared to Ida's Garden or the like so it offers a good base to see what we have going on. What I like the to call this step is building out. It will become a little more evident here why I prefer that tacky-backed fusible. For this design specifically, I will position the body of the flamingo first. *You will need to remove any paper backing depending again on what type of product you chose. Next, I will situate the two stick legs in place before pressing. At this time I sew around the edge of my flamingo body using a slightly lengthened straight stitch. Just make sure that you start from the bottom up. Light pink feather next, then the grey elements. Stitching those down before adding the black bits in place. Everything gets sewn down when I make knit appliques because I want them to last and be loved for a long time.

If you're scratching your head and saying, "Applique with a straight stitch?!" allow me to explain. Knit fabrics like t-shirt materials do not fray. I have a favorite presser foot, the BERNINA #34 which I rave about in this post if you're interested in learning more. You do not need any specialty foot or settings to create a knit applique though. Start your stitch in part of the design that is flattest, slowly working your way into and around corners. You may need to stop your machine, keeping needle down, lift your presser foot and pivot (replace presser foot back down) before stitching along for best results. I feel there are many cheater tricks to this whole technique. Knits don't fray- that's easy! If you're a little unsure choose a thread that matches your fabric so that any wonky stitches will blend into the fabric. If you're confident enough in your sewing skills try using a darker contrasting thread or using a bean stitch for more visual impact. Once you're project is complete learn how to care for your applique so that it lasts- How To Wash An Appliqued T-shirt.
You've kicked the habit of disposable water bottles and bring your own bag every time you hit Joann's Fabric store. In many ways sewing itself can be the ultimate form of going green. It's an empowering skill set that allows you to alter, repair, and create garments or projects that can live on beyond our landfills. In honor of Earth Day, I want to share with you 5 ways you can green your sewing or sewing room today! If you have some spare time take an in-depth look at sewing green in my Guide to Sewing With a Conscious.
1. Reuse Storage Solutions
Baby food jars, Tupperware containers, take out boxes- they all offer easy and inexpensive storage solutions for your home studio. Not only do their clear sides make it easy to find what you need, but when grouped together their organizational appeal is easy to appreciate.

2. Source Reused & Repurpose Fabrics
Beyond hunting fabrics and repurposing clothing found at second hand stores the internet opens up a wide resource for sewists who want to use primarily reclaimed materials. Facebook Groups such as Free Design Material Group, Fabric Destash For People Who Aren't Cray Cray, and Instagrams #TheGreatFabricDestash are all fantastic ways to score materials or sell those you no longer need. www.fabscrap.org offers pick up services in NYC & sells designer/factory excess online. (@Fabscrap on Instagram) You might also be interested in using The Squirrelz App which allows you to post/find excess design materials. Creative Reuse Centers are popping up around the country & around the world- see if there's one in your community!
3. Zero Waste: Sew Your Scraps
Snips and snibbles of fabric as small as 1/4" can be repurposed- you just need a little inspiration! Need a few ideas? Scrap Fabric Society on Pinterest
4. Know Your Fabric
Try to stick with sustainable, organic cotton, wool, hemp, and/or fabrics made from recycled elements. Fabric should be locally produced if at all possible, and either undyed or printed with low-impact pigments. Don't forget to look for green notions to complete your sewing project. Thread, zippers, bindings, and even quilt batting come in environmentally safe versions, as well.

5. Recycle What You Can't Reuse
Replaceable rotary cutter blades are recyclable. Check out The LP Sharp Company. They exchange blades for new ones at a fraction of the cost. Their return program allows you to send in (minimum of 5) blades any brand, size, or condition in exchange for Olfa brand or generic rotary cutter blades.

Plastic thread spools are #6 plastic and can be recycled in most municipalities.

Fabrics & scraps can be sold & given away to friends or on groups listed above. TrashN2Tees clothing recycling offers mail in options as well as drop off locations around the country.

These are just a few ways you can green your sewing craft. What other ways can we be environmentally conscious in our sewing? Leave your suggestions in the comments below.
Each year to celebrate Earth Day I focus on creating one call to action that will inspire communities to creatively reuse while also enlightening them to some of the issues our future generations face. Last year we kicked off the Big Ball of T-shirt Yarn project which has set out to break a world record. This year we're celebrating with #TheWastedSwap. I put out an open call to participants who love sewing mail swaps and wanted a little challenge- reuse & unconventional materials challenge. Our collective aim is to change the way we consume and create. There are still a few days left until Earth Day, April 22nd, even if you didn't to participate in the swap (we capped out within the first 24 hours) I encourage you to repurpose something next week and share it with us using #thewastedswap on Instagram for an extra 5 entries into today's giveaway!
With one week left to mail our #thewastedswap totes or pouches I thought it would be a great idea to share a few fun things that you might consider adding to your package. Of course, you are not required to send any extras! They're just for fun. Given that the goal of this swap was just one way we can encourage other seamstress/crafters to look beyond conventional materials to create- reuse, repurpose, and rethink the way we consume it almost seems counter productive to add a bunch of frills?! Worry no more. Here are ___ small DIY projects, giftables, or eco-friendly notions you could possibly include in any sewing swap package to help it be a little more "green"
Spring has sprung and it's that time of the year when we start cleaning out our closets and drawers. I thought I'd share another great way to reuse your t-shirts.

Hug a tree, plant an organic garden, have a picnic, or cut up discarded t-shirts — however you’re planning on spending Earth Day (today!) have fun & make it count!

We all know about the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle but the statistics are staggering when it comes to the amount of clothing/textile waste we toss into our landfills. According to the EPA, 13 million tons of textiles are thrown away each year (in the US alone) and while our recycling rates continue to rise, only a meager 15 percent of textile waste is recovered for reuse and recycling, wasting nearly 11 million tons each year! Even the most worn out items can be collected and processed into new materials, whether it’s cleaning rags, carpet padding or rubberized playgrounds. What do you do when your clothing gets worn out?

I’m committed to changing the way we consume and create and I’m honored to have partnered with on the Pellon® for the Retread Your Threads series. *You can find all of the archived projects by clicking the link! Through TrashN2Tees I’ve been able to not only raise awareness about clothing recycling, offer options for collection and processing, and teach creative workshops that transform unwanted items into wearable and practical works of art — to date I’ve been able to divert more than 50 tons of clothing from our landfills. Join me today & let’s create change together with these sweet upcycled t-shirt pendant necklaces. (Pssst! Mothers Day is coming up too!)

If you're heading to the heart of Pennslyvania this week with thousands of other quilters/makerly types I hope you'll take some time to check out the amazing vendors and new machines on the market. Today, Wednesday, March 29th I'll be joining Hinkletown Sewing & The BERNINA Family on the floor demonstrating the many different ways avid quilters can make the most of owning a serger! Does that sound like something you'd be interested in too?

I hope to meet new friends and help them to love their sergers. If you're a quilter, crafter, or sewist of any level and you'd like a community and support please join us at BERNINA Overlocker/Serger Group on Facebook. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1388430624793902854.post-90700693906239474692017-03-27T13:35:00.003-04:002017-04-11T19:32:12.207-04:00This Week: Down in the Denim

There are several things influencing my maker mind this week. Not only have I received a VIP Copy of Blair Stocker's new book: Wise Craft Quilts, thinking about The Wasted Swap, and I'm also in the middle of spring cleaning. Not your regular type of spring cleaning, this is a beefed up version of it; as we are preparing (hoping) to relocate back to Kentucky later this year.

Over time I've accumulated loads of discarded clothing (no one is surprised) whether they're donated to me directly at an event, dropped off, or things I've squirrelled away for another day. I imagine it's similar to buying fabric. Imagine a wild and out of control fabric stash with all of your dream prints. Now- imagine that as a pile of laundry. You're getting close. I can't move all of this stuff.

The point of this all, was to mention the cool denim friendship bracelet (pillow or quilt to be decided) I started working on. Pictured above. And the fact that I have a large tote full of denim that's too heavy to move- so something needs to be made from it! Also what I'm working on.

I've only had a moment to flip through Blair's book- but I promise to follow up with you on all the great projects and hope to try one or two out! What are you working on this week?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1388430624793902854.post-58239564849854972722017-03-24T08:35:00.001-04:002017-03-24T13:44:36.635-04:00BERNINA Ambassador Blog Tour

Welcome to all of you who are reading the TrashN2Tees blog for the first time. I am honored and thrilled to have you join me as we round out the final day of this fantastic BERNINA Ambassador Blog Tour. I'm imaging you found your way here after reading about Kari Carr and how she fell in love with a BERNINA sewing machine more than 35 years ago. Perhaps you were cozied up reading Diane Doran's account of her beautiful dresses her mother made he when she was young- and how magical sewing is. Maybe you even imagined yourself on an archeological dig uncovering quilt inspiration with my dear friend Mandy Leins. Whatever path has brought you here, thank you.

The universe sends us the greatest gifts- and being a part of the BERNINA family has truly been one of them. I am lucky to work alongside and learn from some of the most talented men and women in this industry. I've shared intimately what it means to me to be a brand ambassador for BERNINA. While that original post was written more than 2 years ago- it is still true today.
Unlike Diane whose mother taught her to sew when she was young, I did not get to experience that magic until early adulthood. Teaching myself along the way. Often times I look around to my peers who've been sewing for so long and wish that I, too, would've experienced that freedom in those formative years. While I relish and trust in the timing because I fully appreciate the power, confidence, and achievement these skills and challenges offer.

Sewing has provided me with a concrete path of action, how I have chosen to make a difference in the world. For me, I've used sewing as way to empower and inspire communities around the world to reimagine textile waste taking it beyond refashioning your wardrobe to opening up your eyes to the devastating toll of fast fashion, consumption, and helping create (read: sew!) measurable, practical solutions we can utilize in our own homes. This journey started as a small home business for me as a line of funky, fun, whimsical applique designs I sold under my brand TrashN2Tees. The designs were (and still are today) all original hand cut designs from discarded clothing. This is called upcycling (or downcycling depending on who you ask!)
Today, my business has evolved to include nationwide textile recycling, the development of recycled fabrics. published author, designing patterns, workshops, and classes that promote sustainable sewing or empower students to explore new techniques and find their passion. Last week we kicked off the first official "Wasted Swap" I'm still surprised and humbled by the great response. This upcycled and/or conventional sewing challenge is my call to action to the sewing community urging creatives to seek innovative ways to reduce our waste for Earth Day! Last year, I toured the state visiting elementary schools exploring the effects of textile waste while teaching them fun and practical ways they can easily upcycle (without sewing!) We even set out to break a work record for the largest ball of t-shirt yarn!

This week's inspiration is focusing on texture & materials you can opt to use for any of your sewing projects. Beyond upcycling bed sheets, vintage linens, and clothing. You can find some unique ideas and tutorials on The Wasted Swap Pinterest Board. I, myself, have been tinkering with some ideas that tickle my brain cutting up latex gloves to create a scaled material. It's been moved to the back burner for now but maybe I'll revisit it again soon.

If you're not sure where to find unconventional materials or fabrics to repurpose in your own designs I have the perfect post for you. Find a Creative Reuse Center near you! A creative reuse center, if you've never been to one- is like the motherload honey hole for anyone who loves to craft, repurpose, or upcycle. The materials aren't limited to just 'trash' though. Each location has its own flavor but you'll find something you want to bring home at each one- or drop off! These locations also collect craft supplies, signage, textiles, industrial and architectural pieces, educational materials, toys, and more. You'll save on disposal costs, contribute to the community, and help divert tons of materials “too good to throw away” from landfill each year! What are you waiting for?! Here's a growing list of Creative Reuse Centers in the United States and around the World!

You can easily repair the knee of your jeans with your sewing machine, I'll show you how! There are always pants to repair being a mom of 2 boys- and often enough I'll patch them using needle and thread stitching by hand. That's time-consuming. Not to mention these kids are growing so fast I feel like every time I patch a pair of pants they outgrow them 2 weeks later. It's some mean trick.

Today I grabbed a pair of my own favorite jeans that have been thinning in the knees for some time now. The holes had gotten large enough that they needed some serious work. Instead of mending them by hand I opted for a quicker route. (No one here is surprised, right?)

Using my seam ripper I picked the stitches on the outside seam of my pants enough to allow me to fit my pants under my sewing machine needle. I didn't seam rip the entire leg. I used a bit of sulky spray to tack down patches on the backside before mending.

I'm not quite finished with them yet, I feel they still need a little something extra... maybe hand embellishments. Maybe a bit of AMH fabric. I'm not sure. What do you think? I hope those of you who were snowed in today had a bit of sewing to finish or start too!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1388430624793902854.post-2580467085613874402017-03-08T15:49:00.002-05:002017-03-13T08:17:29.071-04:00The Wasted Swap: Earth Day Celebration

Earth Day is just around the corner and you know how I love to call our community to action. This year I thought it would be so much fun to host an unconventional & reuse sewing exchange! You're invited to join the fun. Participants are encouraged to push past their traditional fabric choices and look at "waste" materials in a new way- repurposing and reimaging items we might throw away.

Details:
Sign Ups Open 3/9 and will remain open until 3/16 or 50 spots are filled (whichever comes first) When full I will remove the sign up link from this post.

SIGN UPS ARE NOW FULL
Update: Thank you for the incredible amount of interest and support of this swap. I hope to do another round in the future- if you're interested in participating please follow @JMontilone on Instagram or subscribe to my TrashN2Tees Briefs newsletter for updates.

Think: CD's, tooth picks, monopoly money, tubes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency; 70% of the items in our landfills today can be recycled or reused. Together we're shedding light on this important issue while encouraging others to seek creative alternatives.

Partners will be paired at random and notifications will be sent out shortly after 3/16. Packages must be post marked by April 22! That's Earth Day! Shipping is not always cheap so please reference this great post for tips on keeping your shipping charges down.
Mandy knew this and chose a few various techniques for long arm quilting on the knit fabric. I love the little doily detail!
Are you interested in learning to QUILT and/or sew with knits? I'd love to hear from you in the comments, what kind of questions do you have?
